What do rare earth oxides sell for?
Rare earth oxides do not trade on an open exchange, so there is no free live price. The figures below are the average prices for 2024 and 2025 published by the U.S. Geological Survey, in its rare earthsand heavy rare earths summaries. NdPr oxide, the main input for permanent magnets, averaged US$69 per kilogram in 2025. The heavy rare earths that keep magnets working when hot cost far more: terbium oxide averaged about US$1,010 and dysprosium oxide about US$239.

|---|---|---|
| Terbium oxide, 99.99% min (heavy) | US$812/kg | US$1,010/kg |
| Dysprosium oxide, 99.5% min (heavy) | US$257/kg | US$239/kg |
| Neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide, 99% min | US$55/kg | US$69/kg |

Metal prices: frequently asked questions
Why are rare earth prices not shown live?
Rare earth oxides are sold under private contracts and on Chinese domestic markets rather than on an open exchange, so there is no free public live price. We show the annual average prices the U.S. Geological Survey publishes instead.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals and weighs 31.1035 grams, about 10% more than an ordinary ounce. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are all quoted per troy ounce.
Why is copper priced per pound?
The main U.S. copper contract trades in cents per pound, so copper is usually quoted per pound in North America. The table also converts it to a price per kilogram.
