Lithium stocks in Canada
Canada has two operating lithium mines, plus large lithium resources in hard rock and in underground brines.
The two mines are Tanco in Manitoba and North American Lithium near Val-d'Or, Quebec. Together they produced an estimated 5,983 tonnes of lithium in 2024, about 2.5% of world output. Canada's proven reserves of 1.34 million tonnes rank sixth in the world.
Most of that lithium sits in hard rock called pegmatite, in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. Lithium is also dissolved in brines under oil and gas fields in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and several companies are testing ways to extract it.

We file a company under lithium when its own news releases focus on it, or when its name says so. A company exploring for several metals appears once, under the metal its releases mention most. If a company is in the wrong place, tell us.
What drives lithium in Canada?
Batteries drive lithium. About 88% of the world's lithium went into batteries in 2025, the USGS estimates, mostly for electric vehicles and grid storage. Prices fell hard anyway. The average US lithium carbonate contract price was US$9,000 a tonne in 2025, down 31%. Strong EV sales and battery storage demand then lifted prices in the second half. Global lithium demand rose nearly 30% in 2024, the IEA says.
Canada is trying to move further down the chain. Nemaska Lithium plans to restart the Whabouchi mine in Quebec. It also plans a lithium hydroxide refinery in Bécancour, Natural Resources Canada says. Ontario's 2026 budget calls Frontier Lithium's PAK project the largest lithium project in the province. It's tied to a proposed refinery in Thunder Bay. Canada exported $1.1 billion of lithium batteries in 2024, almost all to the United States.
For explorers, lithium projects, including lithium from brines, qualify for the federal 30% Critical Mineral Exploration Tax Credit, per Budget 2025.
What should you look for in lithium juniors?
A lithium junior is a small company exploring for or developing a lithium deposit, usually with no mine revenue yet. These details are worth checking in its announcements.
- Hard rock or brine: the two are mined, processed and valued in different ways.
- Units: hard rock grades are reported as % Li2O, brine grades in milligrams per litre.
- Processing: a deposit needs a route to a converter before its lithium can become battery chemicals.
