What drives nickel in Canada?
Stainless steel is still nickel's biggest market. It took 64% of nickel use in 2024, with batteries at 15%, Natural Resources Canada says. Prices have been weak. A growing surplus from Indonesia pushed nickel down in 2024. The USGS estimates the average London Metal Exchange price fell another 11% in 2025. About 90% of recent supply growth came from Indonesia, the IEA notes.
Canadian output is growing anyway. The USGS estimates Canada produced about 140,000 tonnes in 2025, after a company finished a mine expansion. Canada supplied 44% of US primary nickel imports from 2021 to 2024. Its nickel refineries are in Fort Saskatchewan, Sudbury and Long Harbour.
Ontario's 2026 budget describes Canada Nickel's Crawford project near Timmins as one of the world's largest nickel resources. Its mineral reserve estimate is 1,715 million tonnes. Nickel explorers qualify for the federal 30% Critical Mineral Exploration Tax Credit, per Budget 2025.
What should you look for in nickel juniors?
A nickel junior is a small company exploring for or developing a nickel deposit, usually with no mine revenue yet. These details are worth checking in its announcements.
- Deposit type: most Canadian deposits are sulphides, which are processed differently from laterites.
- By-products such as copper, cobalt and platinum-group metals can add value to a nickel project.
- Nickel-equivalent grades depend on assumed metal prices, which the footnotes usually list.
